What Is NOx?

What Is NOx?

Nitrogen oxide (NOx) is a chemical compound of nitrogen and oxygen which forms when reacting with each other at high temperatures, specifically during the combustion process. NOx is mainly created during the combustion of fuel, including gas, oil, diesel, and organic matter.

When nitrogen is released during fuel combustion, it combines with oxygen to form nitric oxide (NO). This can then further react with oxygen to form nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide are commonly referred to together as oxides of nitrogen (NOx).

What Are The Effects of NOx?

Nitric oxide itself is not considered to be dangerous to health at ambient air concentrations, but nitrogen dioxide can be hazardous to health as it is an irritant gas. With high concentrations of NO2, it can cause inflammation of the airways which can be very dangerous. NOx gases can be also responsible for causing damage to health, especially respiratory problems.

NOx is often the cause of smog, acid rain, poor air quality, and they are also involved in the formation of particulate matter and ground-level ozone. All of which are considered to have negative effects on health, ecosystems, and the environment.

How Can You Reduce NOx?

Air pollution is a significant international problem that many countries are working on to improve the quality of air. The European Union introduced policies, such as the Clean Air For Europe Directive 2008/50/EC, to help combat air pollution, limit the exposure to air pollutants, and set strict thresholds on emissions of specific air pollutants.

At AAC Eurovent, we offer a comprehensive range of high-performance NOx filters that can deliver effective nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide mitigation for better indoor air quality. Our leading high-performance NOx filters are based on the proven AAC NITROSORB technology enabling our filters to provide measurable reductions in nitrogen oxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, and other indoor air pollutants.
